Reading for Pleasure at Salisbury Manor Primary School

At Salisbury Manor, we believe that it is essential that children develop a love for reading and have time to read a variety of books so that they can enjoy reading. Reading for Pleasure is the entitlement for every child and at Salisbury Manor, we ensure that we are taking multiple steps to foster children’s desire in reading and their engagement in books!

Reading Aloud

Reading aloud is a very essential and frequent part of every school day at Salisbury Manor. Reading aloud is a simple but effective way of enabling our children to experience and enjoy stories they might not otherwise meet. At Salisbury Manor, our teachers ensure to make this a priority by helping children choose well-chosen books aloud, which helps our children develop as confident readers. Additionally, not only does this help deepen and broaden their vocabulary, but it creates a special interest for children to enjoy reading.

Salisbury Manor Library

At Salisbury Manor, we have an engaging, comfortable, colourful, and cosy library, where children have access to a wide range of books. We have designed this library, so that children have an opportunity to find a book of their choice, where they can relax and allow their minds to get into a book! Our library has books with a variety of genres and the books cover a range of different topic and areas of interest which also increase their vocabulary, comprehension, and writing! Our library is a welcoming place, stocked with versatile and engaging texts.

Bookshelves and reading corners

The classrooms are where our children spend most of their time. Therefore, at Salisbury Manor, each classroom has a designated reading corner or bookshelf which has a range of engaging texts! Usually, teachers tend to change these books regularly, so that they match the topic they are learning about in their lessons, which allows our children to gain access to a range of texts.

Regular reading opportunities

At Salisbury Manor, we ensure that we are giving children allocated slots to read in silent. This allows children to step away from everything for a short time and get lost in their books. We have a programme that we follow called: Accelerated Reader, which allows children to find books to match their reading ages. We have a range of different books to represent different reading ages and children have regular opportunities to read and find new books at their reading levels. We also have a designated story time at the end of each day, where our teachers read a story for 15 minutes to their class – which is a fantastic way to end the day. We also highly encourage parents to read to their children and staff often promote books that the children might enjoy.
